Travel Tips for Melbourne, Aus by Where’s Sharon

My name is Sharon and I blog all about family travel on Where’s Sharon when I am not travelling the world myself. I live in Melbourne, Australia with my husband and young kids. You can also find us on facebook.

Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia with about 4 million inhabitants. It is known as being the sporting and cultural capital of Australia and also has the best food and shopping. I love my adopted home city of Melbourne and I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

I grew up in Tasmania, but I have been living in the awesome city of Melbourne, Australia for the past 14 years so it is where I call home. Here are my travel tips for Melbourne, Australia.Travel Tips for Melbourne

Here are the top 5 places I would recommend to you:

1. Visit Federation Square

This popular part of Melbourne seems to constantly be home to some event or festival. There are also many bars and restaurants at Fed Square (http://www.fedsquare.com/) as well as a free museum at ACMI. This should be your first stop in Melbourne as it is also home to a great tourist information centre.

2. Eat at one of Melbourne’s great food precincts

One of my favourite parts of Melbourne is the fabulous food precincts which are spread out about the city. Melbourne is a very multicultural city and this is very clear when it comes to the food. Pick a cuisine that you like and there is a good chance that there is a food precinct which is the place to go to eat it.

3. Watch a sporting match at the MCG.

Melbournians are known for being passionate about sport. The best place to see this for yourself, and enjoy a sporting match at the same time, is at the MCG . In summer you can check out a cricket match and in winter is the very popular Australian Rules football.

4. Shop at the Victoria Market

This massive market is just on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD and is a great place to go souvenir shopping. There are also many other food and clothing bargains at Victoria Market and there is a great food night market in summer.

5. Walk around St Kilda

Melbourne has many cool inner city areas and my favourite is St Kilda. Walk around this area, eat pizza on the beach and enjoy a slice of cake at one of St Kilda’s famous cake shops. There is also a small amusement park and a craft market on weekends as well as many great bars and restaurants.

How to approach the city:

Melbourne is famous for its trams so make sure you catch one while you are in Melbourne. These go to many areas of the city and there is also a free city circle tram. You cannot buy tickets onboard so buy one at a train station or newsagent beforehand.
